Analysis
-
EconomicsWhat sargassum really costs a Caribbean coastline
Cleanup crews are only the visible part of the bill. Most of the cost starts the moment the seaweed reaches the sand.
-
ScienceHow sargassum forecasting works, from satellite to shoreline
Satellites can see the Atlantic’s seaweed belt from orbit. Predicting which beach it hits, and when, takes several layers of data.
-
Circular economyWhat happens to sargassum after it’s collected
Most of it still ends up in landfills. A growing group of entrepreneurs and researchers is turning it into building blocks, fertilizer and fuel.

About HavBotics
Company description
HavBotics is developing BeachDefender, an autonomous surface vessel system designed to intercept sargassum seaweed at sea, before it reaches Caribbean beaches. BeachDefender vessels are designed to work in pairs, towing a special net to capture floating mats and redirect them past the coast, to a managed landfall site or to a collection point.
Guided by NASA satellite data and drift forecasts, the system is designed to run around the clock with support from local boat crews and live onshore monitoring. HavBotics is raising a pre-seed round to validate the vessel, its operations and its commercial model with governments, tourism groups and industry partners.
